I had some teal dye left over from experimenting with silk m
awata and sock yarn (I'll cover those in a later post) and since I'm new to dying, I've been trying a different technique each time I dye.
For these skeins, I had some balls of undyed yarn that I wound into skeins and then dip-dyed. I hung the skeins on a hanger and set up my slow cooker so that slightly less than half of the skeins were in my dye bath. I let them sit until a good amount of dye was taken up so that the colour would be rich and deep, then took the hanger off the cabinet handle and dipped the yarn deeper into the bath several times to build up a less harsh colour change. I then took a straw and used it to pick up dye and drop it onto the undyed half of the skeins to get little flecks and dashes of pale colour.
I then rinsed the yarn well and gave it a wash in some conditioner to soften it and to take away the smell of vinegar (used to fix the colour). I squeezed out as much water as I could and hung it out to dry.
Ready to knit! I'm really happy with the way it came out. I'd like to try this technique again with a nice red/burgundy. I like the effect so much that I'll probably do most of any future dying the same way.
